DIY: Make Your Own Body Butter -- The HBB Way

If your skin’s been feeling a lil' thirsty lately, we got you: DIY homemade body butter. It’s rich, nourishing, and customizable— and once you try it, you may never go back to store-bought again. Unless of course you're like me and love to try everything at least once. Either way I'm giving away our recipe so that you can have something new to add to your list of ways of keeping your skin moisturized, glowing and nourished.
Alright - now let’s get into it.
✨ Why Make Your Own Body Butter?
Your skin is your largest organ, and it deserves ingredients you can actually pronounce (at least for the most part when you look at the INCI list of ingredients even coconut oil is called cocos nucifera). Making body butter at home means no fillers, no preservatives, and no mystery. Just pure plant-based ingredients tailored to your skin’s needs.
Plus, it’s kinda fun.
🦄 What You’ll Need (Base Recipe):
Here’s our simple base that you can tweak to your heart’s content:
-
1/4 cup shea butter
-
2 tbsp cocoa butter
-
2 tbsp mango butter
-
2 tbsp coconut oil
-
2 tbsp sweet almond oil
This is about what you'll need for an 8oz jar.
💖 Step-by-Step: How to Whip It Up
1. Melt your base ingredients.
In a double boiler (or a heat-safe bowl over simmering water), melt the shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and coconut oil until fully liquid. Stir gently.
2. Add your carrier oil.
Once removed from heat, mix in the sweet almond oil. Let it cool slightly—this helps preserve the properties of any essential oils you add next.
3. Add essential oils.
Now you can personalize. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil(s) and stir to combine. If you want to have fun you can add coloring and scent, as well at this step.
4. Chill it.
Place the mixture in the fridge for about 1 hour, or until it’s semi-solid (like soft butter, not rock-hard).
5. Whip it!
Using a hand mixer, whip the chilled mixture for 5–7 minutes until it becomes light, fluffy, and cloud-like.
6. Store & Enjoy!
Transfer to a clean, airtight glass jar. Store in a cool place and use within 3–6 months. However, if you notice that your butter begins to smell rancid before then play it safe and toss it out.
🌿 Wrapping Up
Body butter DOES NOT have to come from a bottle with a ten-syllable ingredient list. You can create your own plant based blend with just a few ingredients adding touches of your personality as you go. It's skincare, redefined & undefined.
Let this be your next DIY win—and don’t forget to label your jar like the skincare alchemist you now are. 🪄
